I don’t. 10/10 would buy a murder house for a discount. We went to see a local paranormal hot spot here in Denton, although the ghost is said to only work his wickedness at night. We hiked the Elm Fork Trail, which is next to the Old Alton Bridge, also known as the Goatman’s Bridge.

According to the legend, a demonic satyr called the Goat man haunts the woods, the more specific legend is a lot creepier, and touches on some unpleasant history.

Oscar Washburn was a black goat farmer who moved his family to a residence just north of the bridge. A few years later, he was known as a dependable and honest businessman, and North Texans endearingly began to call him the Goatman. But the success of a black man was still unwelcome to many, and the local Klan could take no more when Washburn put a sign on the bridge that said “This way to the Goatman’s.”

In August 1938, Klansmen crossed the bridge and kidnapped Washburn. They hung a noose on Old Alton Bridge, put it around Washburn’s neck, threw him off. When they looked down to see if he had died, the noose was empty. Rattled, they returned to his home and slaughtered his wife and children. They were the Klan, after all.

Locals legend states that if you cross the bridge at night without headlights, you will be met on the other side by the Goatman. Ghostly figures and strange lights are said to appear in the surrounding woods, as well as reports of visitors being touched, grabbed, and having rocks thrown at them. This legend results in the area around Old Alton Bridge being popular among paranormal investigators, and it has been featured on TV shows as a result. My son went at night (college student) and said he was more afraid of breaking ankle in the woods than he was of the Goatman. Interesting nonetheless. Of note, the modern concrete bridge you see in the pictures carries traffic, and displays prominent “DEEZ NUTS” graffiti on the side. Welven the Great, who popularized the meme, is from Fresno.

Anoway, we couldn’t complete the hike because the crossing had collapsed.

Toby enjoyed himself nonetheless.

No, but I do support the idea of ghosts as a draw for tourism and entertainment business, as long as its done in a tasteful manner that doesn’t detract from the actual history of the location. I mean, if people think your hotel’s haunted, and want to stay there because of it, good for you - play it the hell up.

My daughter loves ghost and haunting stories. I’m showing this to her.  She may want to make a pilgrimage up there, which is a doable day trip for me.

This is how I feel as well. I don’t believe, but I enjoy being entertained.

Yup. Have a little ghost dog and a pretty violent  entity in my house. No one believed me until my wife starting seeing them too. My therapists wanted me hospitalized. Then they stopped by my house and experienced it as well. Needless to say, I was not hospitalized for that.

Hawaii has a lot of ghost stuff going on, which I didn’t really think about until some strange stuff happened. The first thing could be sleep apnea, we call them hold down ghosts there, you wake up and can’t move and feel weight on you. I did once wake up and hear someone in the shower, I was awake, but I couldn’t move and it felt like heavy air all over me. The second was in a building I used to work in, the basement had a light switch at the bottom of the basement stairs, so safe! I knew the switch was right above the end of the railing, the door at the top of the stairs closes automatically. The last time (and I mean last) I went down there I tried to lift my arm to flip the switch and it felt like heavy air was preventing me from raising my arm higher than the railing.... I stood there in the dark thinking, hmm this is odd, what explanation could there be.... I still can’t raise my arm... then it was gone and I turned on the light, the whole mechanical basement was empty and huge so nobody played a joke on me. I don’t have an explanation.

My friend has one in his house with old wood floors, you can hear distinct footsteps down halls in the house, but it has never done anything malicious .

I like to think I don’t, but when my daughter was 2-3 ish, one bath she kept staring at the corner of the shower, kind of near the ceiling. She later said that she didn’t like that man. A couple of instances similar to that (2,3,4? not sure) and one bath within the next few months (2-3 from the first instance) and she starts absolutely freaking out, runs out of the bathroom, and when we tried to put her back in she was resisting with all her might, bracing herself against the tub, grabbing onto anything she could to keep from going back in like a cartoon cat. There was legitimate fear in her eyes, not just stubbornness. She was uneasy about baths for a while after that, but eventually calmed down. When my second daughter was 1-1/2 to 2, she had a similar episode of staring nervously in the same corner of the tub, but never freaked out like the older one did. My wife mentioned a couple times she saw a shadow, and one time I was working in the basement and caught a pretty dark shadow. The one I saw could have been a combination of beer and my own shadow out of the corner of my eye, but the location it was at was well-lit from the other direction, so I really don’t know. E specially with the episodes with my daughter, I’m wondering.

Kind of an interesting subject . I don’t believe in ghosts in the sense that current culture thinks of them. However, I think people, when distractions are removed, can find a certain level of connectedness with a place that we no longer pick up on.

The fact that the idea of ghosts, or an unknown spirit world exists between entirely disparate cultures leads me to believe there’s something to it in regards to human psychology.

One of my side hustles is a science teacher at an orthodox Jewish school. I’ve been involved in the community going on a decade now. How I became excepted within this community is beyond me. My wife and I were vetted in by a college friend. Jews are like middle eastern Italians.

I’m currently teaching my evolution unit, which I have never received any resistance to. Had probably one of the best lectures of my life last week , in which a rabbi co- taught with me, looking at the connections between evolution and ancient Jewish teachings, and how the idea of biological change exists within ancient teachings.

Very cool shit, and one of the best classes I’ve “ taught”.

Going on a hike, camping in the cool, dark desert, feeling the companionship from a species completely separated from your own. There’s a level of connectedness that humans feel with our world that go  far beyond our current understanding.
